Carbon8Lighting completed a large-scale, staged project at DS Smith Kemsley Paper Mill, one of the largest paper mills in the UK. The project involved replacing all the exterior and street lighting across the site, with the goal of improving lighting levels and reducing energy and maintenance costs. Over a two-year period, the project was implemented in stages to ensure minimal disruption to the mill’s operations.

We began with the creation of detailed lighting designs, carefully tailored to meet the specific needs of the customer. The installation involved the use of the Discus streetlight and Disucs floodlight ranges. Throughout the process, we conducted light level checks to confirm the accuracy of the design in every area. These checks ensured that the lighting improvements met the desired specifications and enhanced overall site performance.
As a result of the project, the paper mill has seen significant cost savings. The new lighting system is delivering an estimated annual electricity saving of approximately £35,000. In addition, the upgraded lighting has reduced maintenance costs by around £8,000 per year, thanks to the longer lifespan and greater reliability of the LED technology we installed.
One of the primary objectives was to enhance light levels across the mill’s exterior areas, and this has been achieved with noticeable improvements. The enhanced lighting has not only increased visibility and safety on-site but also contributed to a more efficient working environment. The improvements were confirmed by our post-installation light level tests, and the feedback from DS Smith has been highly positive.
The client has expressed great satisfaction with the results. The lighting upgrades have exceeded their expectations in terms of both performance and cost savings, making the project a success on all fronts.
In summary, the two-year project at DS Smith’s Kemsley Paper Mill highlights Carbon8Lighting’s ability to deliver customised lighting solutions that provide measurable financial and operational benefits. By integrating professional design, careful implementation, and cutting-edge technology, we have significantly improved lighting quality across the site while reducing ongoing costs for the client.
